Cut the Junk: Filtering Japanese Marketplace Searches Like a Pro
Search any collectible term on Japan's marketplaces — toy camera, film camera, game boy — and roughly half of what comes back is brand-new mass-produced stock from storefront sellers, not the vintage piece you're hunting. On a live Mercari electronics page we sampled, 54 of 117 new listings were flagged 新品、未使用 (brand new). The good news: Japanese marketplaces make sellers declare condition and register business accounts, which means the junk is labeled — you just need filters that read the labels.
Here's how to stack four filters so your alerts only fire on what you'd actually buy.
Filter 1: Condition — the vintage hunter's scalpel
Japanese marketplaces use a shared six-grade condition ladder, from 新品、未使用 (new/unused) down to 全体的に状態が悪い (poor overall — the ジャンク tier). Sellers must pick one, and the grading culture is famously conservative: 未使用に近い (like-new) usually means exactly that.
In Japan Alerts the Condition filter lives on the Filters step of every alert. "Used only" drops grades down to everything but brand-new — instantly deleting dropshipper inventory, whose entire business model is new stock. "New only" serves the opposite hunt: sealed figures, unopened trading-card boxes. And "For parts" is its own hobby — repairers and photographers hunting cheap ジャンク cameras can alert on grades 5–6 exclusively.
Two honesty notes. First: condition filtering works where the marketplace reports condition on new listings — Mercari and Yahoo! Furima today. Rakuma and Yahoo! Auctions listings are never hidden by it (the alert builder shows this coverage per site, and offers one-click 新品/未使用 excludes to close the gap). Second: the grade is the seller's own claim. Japan's grading culture is famously conservative, but no marketplace verifies it — treat the filter as a strong sieve, not a guarantee.
Filter 2: Hide business sellers — the structural cut
Dropshippers and mass-resellers overwhelmingly operate through registered business accounts: Mercari Shops storefronts, Rakuma 事業者 accounts, Yahoo! Auctions stores. The person selling their grandfather's camera collection never is one.
The "Hide business sellers" toggle skips those listings outright on Mercari and Rakuma, where every listing carries the label. On Yahoo! Auctions only some listings do, so unlabeled business stock there still comes through. (Yahoo! Furima has no business accounts at all — it's individuals-only by design.) Combined with "Used only", this is still the closest thing to a dropshipper delete button that exists.
One more honest caveat: some businesses deliberately list from personal accounts to dodge exactly this kind of filter — no label, no filter. That's what the per-seller mute button on every feed card is for: spot one straggler relisting AliExpress stock, one click, and that seller never appears in your alerts again, on any of your searches.
Filter 3: Exclude words — your custom taste filter
Exclude words skip any listing whose title contains them, and they work on every marketplace. They're the sharpest tool for the junk that ISN'T structurally labeled.
A vintage hunter's starter set: 新品 (brand new), 未使用 (unused), 海外 (overseas/import), ノーブランド (no-brand). A repro-wary collector adds レプリカ and 復刻 (reissue). Someone who does NOT want broken items excludes ジャンク. Write them once — they apply to titles across all four marketplaces.
Filter 4: A price floor — junk is cheap, use that
Mass-produced new stock clusters at low prices. If every real example of what you hunt trades above ¥3,000, set that as your minimum price and the ¥980 lookalikes vanish. (Auctions are deliberately exempt from your minimum — a ¥1 starting bid on a grail is exactly the alert you want, and the current bid says nothing about the final price.)
Worked example: early-2010s–90s toy cameras
Searching "toy camera" raw returns a wall of new plastic. The stack that fixes it:
- Search: toy camera (Japanese matching adds トイカメラ automatically)
- Condition: Used only — new stock gone from Mercari & Yahoo! Furima
- Sellers: Hide business sellers — storefronts gone from Mercari, Rakuma & Yahoo! Auctions
- Excludes: 新品, 未使用 — catches new items on the marketplaces that don't label condition
- Min price ¥1,500 — under that, it's rarely the vintage piece
- Then go specific: separate alerts for the exact models you love (Vivitar Ultra, LOMO LC-A, Konica 現場監督) beat one broad net — and each one can carry its own filters.
